The Authentic Communicator workshop

The Authentic Communicator program teaches a concrete, actionable set of tools and skills that reduce conflict in the workplace, increase time spent on tasks and measurably reduce the costs of people problems.

The workshop is available in six modules that progressively develop communications competencies.

Module 1

Participants wll learn how:

  1. To apply the behaviour window model, and thereby determine for any interaction (a) who owns the problem and (b) which communication skills are required. (Those skills described later.)
  2. To be able to make the distinction between observed behaviour of others, and personal judgements of others based on observed behaviour.
  3. To recognise that for each observer, some behaviours of others are acceptable, and some are unacceptable.

Module 2

Participants wll learn how:

  1. To be able to recognise the critical moments when skilled listening will build trust and facilitate the development of another.
  2. To be able to avoid the 12 typical responses that cause most helping attempts to fail.
  3. To be able to quickly establish rapport with another person by creating unconscious sameness.
  4. To understand and apply a simple six-step problem-solving process.
  5. To become functional in the powerful skill of Active Listening, and to understand the role of self awareness in delivering this skill.

Module 3

Participants wll learn how:

  1. To learn to recognise, and avoid, the usual counterproductive ways of confronting others unacceptable behaviours.
  2. To understand how anger sometimes covers up more basic feelings.
  3. To become functional in the use of I-Messages to effectively assert with others, even when an I-Message causes upset in the other.
  4. To learn the natural limits of the assertive I-Message.

Module 4

Participants wll learn how:

  1. To apply the continuum of tension model to current and past work relationships to understand how tension may grow when not addressed.
  2. To understand the price we pay for resolving conflict either by autocratic or permissive means.
  3. To effectively demonstrate the use of the six-step conflict resolution model to resolve a conflict of needs.

Module 5

Participants wll learn how:

  1. To understand the special nature of the conflicts called Values Collisions.
  2. To learn a variety of effective strategies for the influencing, changing or accepting anothers differing values.

Module 6

Participants wll learn how:

  1. To learn and demonstrate appreciative and preventative I-Messages for use in the No Problem zone.
  2. To participate in exercises that enable each participant to integrate key communication concepts from the program as deeply held beliefs, decisions, actions.
  3. In doing this, each participant helps turn personal insight into repetitive behavioural patterns.
